Many of us spend a lot of time on the Internet using social media, websites and email to promote our businesses. Online promotion is essential in today’s business environment, but don’t overlook the fact that we still live and breathe in the real world as well. There are many opportunities right outside your own door, in your own community and nearby. Make an effort and resolve to get up from your computer and experience the world in 3-D.
While you are out and about in nature you will enjoy the sounds of children playing, car horns honking and birds singing. You will also enjoy interaction with other people. This is natural. While you are meeting other physical human beings and building new relationships be sure to give the people you meet a business card so that they can easily remember who you are and how to find or contact you when you return to your virtual world.
Important things to include on your business card are your name, company name, what you do and virtual contact info such as email and Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn account information.
Keep in mind that in-person business networking is not limited to formal events like mixers, tradeshows, conventions or chamber of commerce events. Keep your business cards with you all of the time and give them to every new person you meet or people who you have not seen in awhile who may need to be reminded of your product or service. Remember that old TV commercial for a certain prestigious charge card that cautioned “Don’t Leave Home Without It? Well the same is true of your business cards there are opportunities all around you if you reach out – - and give someone a business card.
